What is Place-Based Service-Learning?Place-Based Service-Learning is the convergence of the Place-Based Learning model, developed by Adopt-A-Watershed and others, and Service-Learning. Place-Based Learning is a teaching and learning process that uses the local environment and community as the context for learning. Place-Based Learning focuses learning on the central concepts and principles of multiple disciplines, involves students in problem-solving and other meaningful tasks, allows students to work autonomously to construct their own learning, and culminates in realistic, student-generated products. Service-Learning is a teaching method where guided or classroom learning is deepened through service to others in a process that provides structured time for reflection on the service experience and demonstration of the skills and knowledge acquired (Carthryn Berger Kaye, 2004). |
