Credit
Two credit options will be offered to teachers attending the Tahoe Environmental Literacy Summit, Nevada inservice and Sierra Nevada College recertification. The instructor of record for both courses is Dan Allison, an Environmental Literacy Consultant from Carson City, Nevada. Dan has a M.S. in Outdoor Education, a Nevada Elementary License, and a California Multiple Subjects Credential. He has been involved in much of the environmental education taking place in the Lake Tahoe Basin since 2001. [resume]
We take our professional development responsibility seriously, and expect from you full participation in the entire summit to receive credit. The lunch is a working lunch, so you have a half hour for lunch and a half hour for the open exhibits, or both mixed together over the hour, At the open exhibits, there will be resource information and agency and organization staff to talk to. This means you won't be able to leave the summit during lunch time, or to have a full hour for lunch. If you leave during lunchtime, you will have to make up that time. If you have to leave for an emergency reason during the summit, please talk to Dan Allison so that arrangements can be made.
Nevada Inservice Credit
Nevada teachers will be able to receive Nevada Department of Education one-half (0.5) inservice credit for free. Participants will register for credit during check-in, including their social security number, initial again at the end of the day, and will be required to attend the entire day in order to receive credit. No work after the summit is required.
Recertification Credit
Any teacher will be able to receive one (1.0) graduate level teacher recertification credit through the Sierra Nevada College's Teacher Education Program. This credit is accepted by all school districts in Nevada, and should be accepted by districts in California, but you will have to confirm that with your district. The fee will be $100 for one academic credit, and will require attendance at the summit (7.5 hours) and follow-up assignments (7.5 hours). The options for completing the additional work, by November 30, are:
- Create a lesson plan of at least two hours, implement the lesson in your own classroom (or cooperatively with other teachers), evaluate the lesson in a paper of no less than three pages, and provide your lesson plan and evaluation for posting on the Teach Tahoe curriculum site.
- Develop a service-learning project with at least one agency, organization or business partner. Document the project, evaluate the project after the first activity in a paper of no less than three pages which includes partner feedback.
- Implement at least two lessons acquired during the summit, which include the use of environmental literacy guidelines and techniques to achieve standards in science and integrated with at least one other subject area. Write a reflection on the success and challenge of using environmental literacy to achieve academic standards, no less than four pages.
You may pay the credit fee by check to Sierra Nevada College. Cash and credit card cannot be accepted. You will fill out your registration form and pay your fee at check-in, from 8:30 to 9:00. You do not have to be previously enrolled in SNC to take this course.
